‘We’re in a good position for the return’

The men from Munich were very pleased with their going-in position for the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 meeting with Juventus, but were less happy with surrendering a two-goal lead in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw. “If you’re 2-0 up against opponents like these, you have to close out the win,” commented goalscorer Arjen Robben. However, said captain Philipp Lahm, “we’re in a good position for the return.”

Reaction to Juventus v Bayern

Pep Guardiola: “I’m very satisfied with our performance. We played very well for 90 minutes. Obviously it would have been better to win, but we were playing against last year’s finalists. It was an incredible performance! It’ll be just as tough in the return as it was today. Juventus have great mental strength.”

Philipp Lahm: “The Champions League was the winner today. The fans saw plenty of action. We can live with a 2-2 draw. We’re in a good position for the return. Juventus are a very good team. We let them back into the game due to our own mistakes, but we can definitely take heart from the first 60 minutes.”

Arjen Robben: “You sense the disappointment in the dressing room. If you’re 2-0 up against opponents like these, you have to close out the win. We have to maintain our control, especially in defence. But we’re well-placed for the return. We’ll need plenty of passion at the Allianz Arena but also cool heads, like we showed for the first hour today.”

Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus coach): “I’ve congratulated my players. I'm neither disappointed nor worried. We were up against one of the favourites to win the Champions League. We could even have won, but it's very hard against a side as good as Bayern. We'll have to win the return. It's not going to be easy, but it isn't impossible.”

Sami Khedira (Juventus): “After the first half we fought our way back into the game and played very well in the second half, so we're very satisfied with the result. Battling back after being 2-0 down against Bayern was a great performance by the team.”
