Training in Essen and Munich

There was to be no lazy lie-in for the FCB stars on the morning after the DFB Cup quarter-final meeting with VfL Bochum. The team spent the night in the Ruhr Valley city of Essen and trained from 9.30 am on Thursday. The previous night’s starting eleven completed regeneration exercise in the hotel fitness centre, with the rest of the team travelling to the nearby Uhlenkrugstadion for an intense session on the practice ground. The cup semi-finalists flew back to Munich at lunchtime. Back at the club’s Säbener Strasse base Mario Götze, Mehdi Benatia, Franck Ribéry and Serdar Tasci continued working on individual sports rehab programmes.

Juve’s Chiellini ruled out

Italian record champions Juventus are likely to be without Giorgio Chiellini for the Champions League Round of 16 first leg meeting with FC Bayern in Turin on 23 February. The defender sustained a calf injury in last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Frosinone Calcio and will be sidelined for around three weeks. By contrast, Juve’s injured World Cup winner Sami Khedira could be fit to face FCB. Khedira is currently out of action with a groin strain.
