Vidal fires brace, Costa held

Arturo Vidal was the hero for Chile on Tuesday night with two goals for his national team in a 4-1 victory over Venezuela in South American qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. After six matchdays, Copa America holders Chile have ten points and are fourth in the standings behind Uruguay and Ecuador on 13 points and Argentina on 11.

The situation is less rosy for Douglas Costa and Brazil after A Seleçao were held 2-2 away to Paraguay, although a defeat seemed on the cards for coach Carlos Dunga’s team until late strikes from Ricardo Oliveira and Dani Alves to salvage a point. Costa covered the full 90 minutes but failed to hit the target on this occasion. Brazil, who were without Neymar of Barcelona and Paris St. Germain’s David Luiz, are sixth in the World Cup qualifying table on nine points.
