The 1974 European Cup final, Atlético v FC Bayern. The most special match for Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck in his time at FC Bayern. The men from Munich were heading for defeat but ultimately earned a replay thanks to the defender's stoppage-time equaliser. Two days later the Bavarians won 4-0 and hoisted Europe's top club trophy for the first time. In a chat with fcbayern.de Katsche Schwarzenbeck recalls the final and previews the upcoming clash between the German record champions and the Spanish high-flyers.
“In the last few days people have often asked me about the 1974 European Cup final against Atlético. I remember it well: we were in extra-time, Atlético were 1-0 in the lead. Shortly before the final whistle Franz squared the ball to me. I was surprised because he would normally have played the ball vertically towards goal. My intuition was right, I took a shot – at the very moment when Gerd started to grumble about not getting the ball. I scored.
That goal was important for me and for the club, no question. The equaliser sent us to the replay only two days later, which we won 4-0. Inconceivable today: only two days later! We prepared for the second game with gentle training and massage as well as a good feeling. And it went well. It was the first of three European Cup triumphs in a row. It was the most beautiful moment in my career, ahead even of the World Cup triumph.
The two Champions League semi-final encounters are a tough challenge for Bayern. Atlético are difficult opponents. The Spaniards are awkward to play against and have to be taken seriously, then and now. The main thing for Bayern will be to take at least one point away from home. That would put them in a good position for the return in Munich. I'll be at the stadium then, I'll watch the first leg on TV. I'm convinced: FC Bayern will reach the final!”
