Two weeks after the clubs agreed terms Mats Hummels has officially joined FC Bayern from Borussia Dortmund. The 27-year-old completed the obligatory medical on Monday before inking a new five-year contract with the German record champions, keeping him in Munich through 30 June 2021.
“We're delighted to welcome Mats back to FC Bayern,” commented FC Bayern München AG chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “Not only are we strengthening our squad with a world-class centre-back, but also with a player who accepts responsibility and who is our own youth product. First of all we wish him a successful Euro 2016.”
'I'm very excited'
Hummels joined the FC Bayern junior team in 1995 at the age of six and played at every level of the club's youth programme. In 2005 he was promoted to the FCB reserves under current first team assistant coach Hermann Gerland and spent two and a half years in the second team before making his senior debut at the Allianz Arena in 2007. Hummels left FC Bayern in January 2008 and has played for Borussia Dortmund since then.
“Saying goodbye to Dortmund was difficult for me of course. It was similar to 2008, when it was the other way around,” Hummels said after signing his contract. “Now I'm looking forward to everything that awaits me at FC Bayern. I'm very excited.”
