The EURO 2016 is over for David Alaba and his Austrian team-mates after a 2-1 defeat against Iceland in their last group match. Alaba & Co only clawed their way into the game after the interval. Jon Bödvarsson put Iceland in the lead early in the contest. Austria levelled it up on the hour when Alaba set up Alessandro Schöpf, a former FC Bayern junior. Austria needed a win to make the knockout stages and upped the pace, but Iceland restored the lead on the break in stoppage time. Austria's Aleksandar Dragovic missed a penalty shortly before the break after Alaba was felled in the box.
On a more positive note, new FCB signing Renato Sanches and his Portuguese compatriots drew 3-3 with Hungary, sealing a last sixteen spot as one of the best third-placed sides. Apart from Alaba, all Munich men are through to the Round of 16. It is now certain that Germany encounter Slovakia in the first knockout stage.
