Thiago and Spain out, Germans face Italy

Midfield ace Thiago is the only FCB man to fail to survive the Round of 16 at EURO 2016. In Monday evening's re-run of the 2012 final, holders Spain were beaten 2-0 by a sprightly Italy, whose surprise choice of attacking tactics caused the Spanish defence immense problems from the start. Giorgio Chiellini struck a deserved 33rd minute opener to send Thiago & Co in at the break a goal down. The Spanish finally shook off their torpor after the interval and created a string of presentable chances, but that in turn opened up opportunities on the break for the Azzurri. Graziano Pelle put away the decisive goal in the first minute of stoppage-time to send the holders tumbling out of the tournament. Thiago remained an unused sub.

Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Joshua Kimmich, Mario Götze, Thomas Müller and incoming Munich man Mats Hummels now meet the Italians in the quarter-finals, with Poland and Robert Lewandowski up against Portugal and new FCB signing Renato Sanches. Kingsley Coman and hosts France meet Iceland after the minnows' shock victory over England late on Monday evening.
