Germany enjoyed a successful dress rehearsal for the upcoming Euro 2016 as the world champions beat fellow Euro participants Hungary 2-0 with four Bayern pros in Saturday night's starting line-up. Hungary's Adam Lang put through his own goal shortly before the break with Thomas Müller doubling the lead on the hour.
“We were better than in the last match, so we can be satisfied,” commented Jérôme Boateng. The defensive pillar, Manuel Neuer, Mario Götze and Thomas Müller made the starting line-up, whereas Joshua Kimmich did not make an appearance this time. Germany head coach Joachim Löw summarised: “The victory boosts our confidence, providing a good feeling. But we have to step up our game next week.”
The 50,000 crowd in Gelsenkirchen saw the Germans start energetically. Götze set up Julian Draxler who netted after 59 seconds, but the goal was incorrectly called offside. Shortly before the break Götze set up the visitors' own goal after a Jonas Hector cross, who was in fact offside this time.
Delight at Schweinsteiger's comeback
Löw's troops continued to dominate the match after the interval, earning their reward when Müller kept his cool and netted a rebound. Former Bayern pro Bastian Schweinsteiger made his comeback 68 minutes into the contest.
Neuer & Co have two free days before setting off for their Evian team base. Germany take on Ukraine in Lille on 12 June at 21.00 before crossing swords with Poland in Paris on 16 June at 21.00 and Northern Ireland in the French capital on 21 June at 18.00 CET.
