Brazil were knocked out of the Copa America in the group stages, but the five-time world champions are now planning to make amends at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. To beef up the hosts’ efforts Bayern winger Douglas Costa has been called into the Seleçao squad by coach Rogerio Micale, where the FCB man will join Barça star Neymar. The 2016 summer Olympics take place from 5 to 21 August.
Germany turn focus to Italy
Germany national team coach Joachim Löw gave his players Wednesday off before the focus turns to Bordeaux on Saturday, where Thomas Müller and Co are aiming for a historic first victory over Italy at a major tournament. “The most important thing we’ve learned from the game [at the EURO] in 2012 is that it’s better not to fall behind against Italy, because they’ll focus totally on defending,” said Munich-bound Mats Hummels. “The best thing would be if the Italians were forced to change their game plan due to an opening goal from us.” Jérôme Boateng, Hummels, Sami Khedira and wide man Julian Draxler have all shaken off knocks picked up against Slovakia in the Round of 16. Jonas Hector has flu but should be fit by Saturday.
Ancelotti’s praise for Germany and Sanches
Incoming Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti says there are no favourites in the EURO quarter-final between Germany and his native Italy. “It would have been easy to call this game before the tournament, but not any more,” the 57-year-old told Italian media. Ancelotti is impressed with Joachim Löw’s players, describing them as “an exceptional team with no weaknesses. It’s a pleasure to watch them play.” The future FCB supremo is also much taken with the club’s summer signing Renato Sanches. “He’s phenomenal,” Ancelotti declared.
