Douglas Costa has been forced to withdraw from the football tournament at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games from 5-21 August because an injury to the Brazilian international’s left thigh has yet to heal. FC Bayern has informed the Brazilian association that Costa can therefore not be released for the tournament.
“I greatly regret this,” commented FC Bayern München AG chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “We all wanted Douglas to contest the Olympic Games in his home country, but the player’s health and fitness takes priority.”
Costa, who was examined by the FC Bayern medical unit on Monday, will continue his sports rehab programme in Munich over the coming weeks.
