Atlético clash: The factfile

FC Bayern and Atlético cross swords for the fifth time in a competitive fixture on Wednesday evening. The last two encounters date back to last season's Champions League last four, when the Spaniards only prevailed on away goals after a 1-0 victory and a 2-1 reverse from an Atlético point of view. The two sides also met in the 1974 European Cup final, when FCB won the replay 4-0 after a 1-1 draw.

Like a final

Bayern against Atlético: it sounds like a Champions League final. Of the last five finals in Europe's premier club competition, only one took place without either of the sides, the 2015 clash between Barcelona and Juventus. Bayern contested the 2012 and 2013 finals, whereas Atlético were finalists in 2014 and 2016.

Patchy record in Spain

FC Bayern have only won two of their last 13 matches on Spanish soil, losing nine and drawing two. The German record champions have won six out of 24 meetings in Spain overall and lost 13, with five games ending in a draw.

Atlético's home strength

The Estadio Vicente Calderón has been in a stronghold in the last few years. The Colchoneros have won 25 of their last 30 European home matches, losing two and drawing three. Atlético have only lost one of their last 17 Champions League home matches and won 13, with three games ending in a draw. Diego Simeone's troops have kept a clean sheet in 16 of their last 23 CL matches on their home field, conceding only ten goals.

Positive record against German sides

Atlético are unbeaten in six home matches against German teams, winning five and drawing once. The last time they lost was almost 20 years ago, a 1-0 reverse against Borussia Dortmund in October 1996. The Spaniards have won 12 of 17 home matches against German sides, losing three and drawing two. Their overall record is also positive: 17 victories, 13 defeats and six draws.
