Müller and Lewandowski back on the goal trail

Sometimes it takes a little change to get things going again. Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski only scored a total of four goals in the last seven competitive fixtures, but on Saturday evening the two FC Bayern forwards netted five times in total for their respective national teams.

"It's interesting and kind of funny that it's suddenly working now that it's about the World Cup. You can make great stories out of it. We just want to enjoy it," Müller said after Germany's 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic.

Müller has yet to score in the current Bundesliga and DFB cup campaign, only netting in Champions League fixtures so far. But in a Germany shirt he proved he has not lost his nose for goal. After scoring two of three goals in the first World Cup qualifier against Norway, Müller scored another brace against the Czechs in Hamburg, taking his tally to 36 goals in 80 appearances for his country.

"Thomas Müller is always capacble of scoring when he has the chance. Now he's on a roll again," commented Germany coach Joachim Löw, who knows the native Bavarian's qualities. "He's kept on scoring in the Bundesliga and for the national team every year since the 2010 World Cup," Löw continued.

Müller appeared to have lost his instinct at the Euros in France. "Sometimes a situation like in France comes up," said Löw. However, this applies not only to Müller, but also to Robert Lewandowski. The FCB striker did not live up to his full potential, scoring only once in five matches in France. Even in the most recent Bayern matches goals refused to come.

But things clicked into gear for Lewandowski on Saturday. He scored a hat-trick in Poland's 3-2 victory over Denmark, single-handedly firing his side to a win. It was Lewandowski's third three-goal haul in the current season after hat-tricks in the cup victory over Jena and the Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen.

The two forwards have one more chance to score on international duty before the next three-week phase of midweek matches with seven fixtures for Bayern in three competitions. The FCB faithful will surely wish for Müller and Lewandowski to show their taste for goals like they did on Saturday night.
