In the evening he’s celebrating his baby news, the next morning he’s already surrounded by children. That’s how fast it can go… but Robert Lewandowski must wait a bit longer for his own offspring. “My wife Anna is five months pregnant,” beamed the FCB goalscorer late on Tuesday evening following the 1-0 victory against Atlético Madrid. He’d already let the 70,000 fans in the stadium and millions watching on TV know that an addition to the Lewandowski family was on its way through his celebration on the pitch – thumb in mouth, ball under the shirt.
“We’d planned that for when I next scored in Munich,” revealed the 28 year-old Pole. “It’s always been a dream to officially declare that my wife’s pregnant. I’m delighted.” Lewy dedicated his fine strike to his wife. “That goal was for her and the baby she’s carrying. It was a special game for me and a special goal. I’m very happy right now.”
17 goals in 22 games
Hardly any of Lewandowski’s teammates had expected the news. “Almost everyone was surprised at the time, and then there were spontaneous congratulations,” reported Mats Hummels. Carlo Ancelotti also congratulated the future father after the game and was pleased: “When you have children you’re more motivated.”
However, the prolific scorer has certainly not been lacking in motivation or performance levels either this season or last. His goal against Atlético was his 17th goal in 22 competitive games. It was also his sixth goal in seven Champions League games and his 14th in 12 home games in the competition, not to mention his second free-kick in the space of five days.
Visit from home
“I’ve been practicising free-kicks regularly for two or three months,” said Lewandowski, explaining his newfound set-piece quality. “Free-kicks can be important in games when there aren’t many chances.” Like the game against Atlético, for example. “It’s the result of good hard work,” said Hummels. “I’ve seen him practising free-kicks all season. He strikes the ball very well from distance.”
On Tuesday evening at the Allianz Arena, 19 Polish youth players saw it for themselves. Then on Wednesday, the kids from Stettin and Bydgoszcz, who had won the U9 and U11 championships in Poland, visited Säbener Straße and met their role model Robert Lewandowski. The striker showed that he’s already good with children – you only had to look in the boys’ eyes.
