Crucial victory for Lewandowski

Poland with captain Robert Lewandowski beat Montenegro 2-1 on Sunday evening, taking a crucial step on the road to Russia. The Bayern striker scored the opener from a free-kick late in the first half. Stefan Mugosa scored the equaliser for the hosts after the hour mark before Lukasz Piszczek closed out the meeting with a lob. The result means Poland remain table-toppers on 13 points, six clear of both Denmark and Montenegro.

Lewandowski and Co. aimed to extend their three-point lead over the hosts, and they signalled their intent from the off. Their relentless pressure paid off when the captain stepped up to take a free-kick, leaving netminder Mladen Bozovic without a chance. Lewandowski now boasts eight goals in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has found the net more often, nine times.

Both teams upped the ante after the equaliser, with Piszczek handing his side their fourth victory in the fifth match and a very comfortable cushion at the top of their group.
