FC Bayern convincingly advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night. After thrashing Arsenal 5-1 in the first leg, the Bavarians won the return by the same scoreline at the Emirates Stadium. However, the Gunners put up a fight for a long time and "did a good job in the first half," according to Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "We weren't as good as normal in possession," analysed head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
But the Bavarians increasingly gained a grip on the contest and were on fire after the equaliser. "We've ultimately deserved to go through, no question," summarised Mats Hummels.
Reaction to Arsenal v FCB
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: "There are no easy matches in the Champions League, especially away from home. Arsenal did a good job in the first half. They were closer to doubling their lead than we were to an equaliser. It was only after the penalty that the tide turned, and then we won deservedly."
Carlo Ancelotti: "It was a tough match. We had problems in defence until the penalty. They applied pressure as we had expected, but we should have controlled the game better. We weren't as good as normal in possession. But it happens. It's hard to stay focused if you're 5-1 up. We'd said we wanted to stick to our game plan, but it's not easy when you're so clearly in front."
Mats Hummels: "The result doesn't reflect what happened until the penalty and the sending-off. It decided the match in our favour. Our display up to that point was a bit off-colour, we were more or less content to contain our opponents even though our plans had been different. It's understandable, but it shouldn't happen. We had some chances to score in the first half, to instil some calm. But we failed to put the chances away. We've ultimately deserved to go through, no question."
Manuel Neuer: "Apart from the first ten minutes things didn't go as planned at first. We didn't want to concede a goal, but then we scored five."
Arsène Wenger (Arsenal coach): "We played very well, with a lot of pace. We put Bayern under pressure. Then we had bad luck with the referee's decisions, in my view it wasn't a penalty. With a man down it was impossible to score four goals."
