Wednesday evening will be the tenth time that FC Bayern play Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup. Hamburg and Schalke are the only sides that FCB have faced more often in the competition (11 times each). Bayern have won on six occasions while BVB have progressed on three. Five of the nine ties went to extra time, with three going to penalties. fcbayern.com takes a look back at the five most recent cup encounters:
21 May 2016, final: FC Bayern 0-0 Borussia Dortmund (4-3 on penalties)
It was a perfect send-off for departing coach Pep Guardiola. The match was still goalless after 120 minutes but it was Bayern who prevailed on penalties, winning 4-3 in the shootout.
28 April 2015, semi-final: FC Bayern 1-1 Dortmund (0-2 on penalties)
The previous cup clash was also decided by spot kicks. Bayern had dominated the game for long periods and led through a Robert Lewandowski goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s equaliser 15 minutes from the end set up a dramatic finale. Dortmund’s Kevin Kampl was sent off in extra-time but Bayern failed to convert a single penalty on a slippery surface.
17 May 2014, final: Dortmund 0-2 FC Bayern (AET)
The defences were on top for 90 minutes at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. A header from Mats Hummels, then of Dortmund, found the net but was ruled out. Then Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller eventually won the game for Bayern in extra time.
27 February 2013, quarter-final: FC Bayern 1-0 Dortmund
Arjen Robben’s curled strike was the difference between the two sides in a highly tactical battle, ensuring that Bayern avenged their defeat in the final nine months earlier.
12 May 2012, final: Dortmund 5-2 FC Bayern 5-2
One week before Bayern’s ‘home’ final in the Champions League, goals from Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry weren’t enough against the newly-crowned German champions and Dortmund completed the double for the first time.
