Real Madrid versus FC Bayern – a classic match-up in the Champions League. The German and Spanish record champions will be meeting in the competition for the 18th time on Tuesday evening. No other fixture has taken place more often. The head-to-head record between the two sides stands at eight victories each and one draw, with a goal difference of 26-24 in favour of Real. fcbayern.com has some further facts and stats ahead of the quarter-final second leg.
FCB slightly ahead
Tuesday will be the 24th time that the two clubs have crossed paths in the whole history of the European Cup. FCB have the slight upper hand here: the Reds have won 11 of the 23 previous contests, with Real winning ten and two ending in draws. The two met at this stage of the competition three years ago, when Real won both legs (1-0 and 4-0) and went on to lift the trophy. Their coach at the time was a certain Carlo Ancelotti.
Two previous wins at the Bernabéu
After losing 2-1 in the first leg, FC Bayern need to win by two goals to reach the semi-finals. They’ve already won twice on Madrid’s home turf, a record matched only by Roma in the Champions League. In February 2000 they won 4-2 in the second group stage and then in May 2001 they won 1-0 in the semi-final (goalscorer Giovane Elber pictured). Real have won their last five home games against FCB, though, and have kept a clean sheet in six of their 11 previous meetings with Bayern at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.
Looking to improve record in Spain
FC Bayern don’t have a great record when it comes to away games in Spain, having only won two of their previous 14 matches on Spanish soil (two draws and ten defeats). They’ve also lost the last four without scoring. In total FCB have won just six of their 25 games in the country, drawing five and losing 14.
Real’s unbeaten run
Holders Real Madrid are unbeaten in 13 games in the Champions League (eight victories and five draws) and have only lost one of their last 23 – a 2-0 defeat at Wolfsburg. Moreover the Whites have only lost one of their last 31 home games in all competitions, winning 25 of them.
Kasai officiating
Viktor Kasai from Hungary is the referee for Tuesday evening’s match at the Bernabéu. It’s the 41 year-old’s 44th game in the Champions League and his fifth involving FC Bayern. In the previous four there have been three Munich victories and one defeat – the 2012 semi-final at Real Madrid.
