"I'm proud of my players, who played with commitment and gave it everything," summarised Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti following the 4-2 defeat after extra-time in the Champions League quarter-final return away to Real Madrid. "If you blame the team you've seen the wrong match," chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge declared after FCB took the match into extra-time, but were a man down and enjoyed little luck on the night.
Reaction to Real Madrid v FC Bayern
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: "It was a true spectacle. A huge compliment to both teams. Our team gave it everything, you mustn't forget that some of our players had knocks. If you look at the displays turned in by Boateng, Lewandowski or Manuel Neuer I can only take my hat off. It was magnificent football, but unfortunately the refereeing decisions went against us. The red card was a heavy blow of course. But if you blame the team today you've seen the wrong match. It was a superb game."
Carlo Ancelotti: "We turned in a really good display, I'm proud of my players, who played with commitment and gave it everything. We came very close to the semi-finals. Some decisions by the referee ultimately decided the match. I know it can happen in football, but not so often at this level. We were in control until the red card."
Philipp Lahm: "The team were brave, they wanted to win, they absolutely wanted to advance to the next round. We were lucky in some situations, but also a bit unlucky in terms of refereeing decisions. We drew the tie on aggregate and took the match into extra-time, and the team would have deserved to progress, but all that doesn't matter now."
Jérôme Boateng: "We all went beyond the pain barrier. It was a very, very difficult match today. We can't blame ourselves, we put up a superb fight. Ultimately it's a pity regarding the refereeing. We were unlucky once or twice, we could have finished our attacks better then. We leave with our heads held high."
Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid coach): "We had to suffer until the end, we were up against the best team this year. We had difficulties but also lots of chances in the first half, but we failed to make the most of them. We were very patient, I think we ultimately deserved to go through. Ronaldo made the difference, he scored five goals in two matches. As a matter of principle I never talk about the referee, but I know why Bayern are upset."
Toni Kroos (Real Madrid midfielder): "It was a great match, even if it's awkward when a refereeing error decides a match. I still think we've ultimately deserved to win."
