Classic Robben! A phrase we often use when Arjen Robben pulls off his signature move: cutting in from the right wing and curling the ball into the far corner. You could also say that lifting league trophies is his trademark as it’s something the winger is equally versed in.
Robben has been playing for FCB for eight years and celebrated his sixth Bundesliga league titles last weekend. It was a particularly special one for him as it’s elevated him to legendary status in his home country. “I read that I’m now level with the greatest Dutch footballer of all time, Johan Cruyff. He was the most successful with ten league titles, and I also have ten. It’s not bad being on the same level as him,” said the proud captain of the Netherlands national team.
Before Robben came to Munich in 2009, he’d already won two titles with Chelsea as well as one each with Real Madrid and PSV Eindhoven. He lifted his first German trophy in his first season and celebrated it in Marienplatz, as this photo shows. It’s a ritual that he’s been repeating every year since 2013, and it’s not complete without some unusual sunglasses or headgear – mostly cut-out footballs in white, red or orange. Fans will be looking forward to seeing which stylish accessory ‘Mr Wembley’ sports this year.
In the ‘Looking Back’ series, fcbayern.com will be presenting regular snapshots from the photo archives for fans to enjoy.
