Mats Hummels is rated doubtful for FC Bayern's Bundesliga home match against SV Darmstadt. The centre-back did not take part in the squad programme of the freshly-crowned champions, but turned in an individual session on Thursday. "I'm carrying a knock at the moment. I don't know how the next few days will pan out for me," Hummels revealed in an interview on FC Bayern TV LIVE.
Hummels sustained an ankle injury during training before the Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid and contested the last few matches with a knock. "The body is a little battered I have to say. My foot is perfectly okay, but I've taken a few bruises to my hip, I have a muscular problem," declared Hummels.
The 28-year-old said he was "really able to unwind" in the days after winning the title, which were free of training. He now wants to "recover from the knocks, I don't have to contest matches with bruises any more and take risks." The world champion will undergo "a lot of treatment," said Hummels, who did not know when he will "resume training as normal."
Hummels draws positive conclusion
Hummels hopes he will be able to play away to second-placed RB Leipzig next week and against SC Freiburg in the season finale. "I'd like to make at least two more appearances. Just be out on the pitch, without pressure, but determined to win. Just have fun playing. We'll see if that works."
With three matches to go, the FCB youth product who returned to Munich from Borussia Dortmund last summer drew a positive conclusion, speaking of a "very good year. I'm highly satisfied with the way things have gone for me personally. I played incredibly often and consistently turned in good displays."
From a team perspective it was "a pity" Bayern went out of the Champions League and the DFB Cup "so early." But the Bayern pros are all the more determined to "progress further next year. It's been a good year, with a little room for improvement."
