The close season means holidays for most players, but not Manuel Neuer. The FC Bayern goalkeeper is currently working on his recovery at Säbener Straße with rehab coach Thomas Wilhelmi after breaking his foot in the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid. The main focus of the programme at the moment is upper body and torso work since they can’t put too much pressure on the foot.

Robben on the training field

Neuer wasn’t the only one working hard at the FCB training ground on Friday. Arjen Robben was out on the pitch, as he was on Thursday, doing an individual session. The Dutchman is keeping fit in preparation for his national team’s two friendlies and an important World Cup qualifier.

Matthäus in Hall of Fame

Germany’s record appearance maker Lothar Matthäus is now a member of German sport’s Hall of Fame. The former Bayern captain was inducted into the 108-member club in Berlin on Friday along with long jumper Heike Drechsler, ski jumper Sven Hannawald and Nordic skier Franz Keller. “He has won everything there is to win. That is justification for calling him the best German player of all time,” said honorary president of FC Bayern and former Germany coach Franz Beckenbauer, lauding his former captain. Together they won the 1990 World Cup in Italy. “Lothar was what you want in a captain. He cared about his teammates’ personal lives,” explained Beckenbauer.
