The mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash between FC Bayern and RB Leipzig more than lived up to its billing, yielding countless chances and nine goals, even though the woodwork was a factor too. "It was an incredible match," commented Carlo Ancelotti after the final whistle. Bayern came from behind twice and ultimately turned the tide. "Leipzig were very strong at the beginning, we were better towards the end. We've seen very aggressive football," the Bayern head coach concluded.
Reaction to Leipzig v Bayern
Carlo Ancelotti: "It was an incredible match. It was an open contest as expected. Both sides have achieved their goal for this Bundesliga campaign. Leipzig were very strong at the beginning, we were better towards the end. We've seen very aggressive football. We could have done a better job in defence. Leipzig were fantastic opponents throughout the season. They've played surprisingly well. It's only the beginning of a great spell for them. They've got young players, they're highly motivated. They'll play in the Champions League next season, it's going to be a great experience for them."
Philipp Lahm: "It was to and fro in the first half. Sure, it's nice for the spectators, but not for us. It's essential for us to play with lots of discipline and to dominate possession, being compact and defending aggressively. But you could tell we absolutely wanted to turn the tide. Leipzig absolutely deserve to be where they are now."
Ralph Hasenhüttl (RB Leipzig coach): "Congratulations to FC Bayern on an incredible victory. Congratulations to everyone at the stadium on an incredible afternoon. This stadium hasn't seen a match like this so far, and neither have I. Our performance over 75 minutes was more than impressive. We may have failed to take points today, but we've won much, much more: hearts and sympathy. For a long time we seemed to be winning against the best German team. But it's not enough to do a good job for 75 minutes. You have to take the final step."
Marcel Sabitzer (RB Leipzig): "We turned in a very good display, but were a bit passive towards the end. We knew Bayern had enormous quality. It hurts of course, it would have been this season's highlight. We're very satisfied with our performance, but we'd have liked to reward ourselves. If you're 3-1 and 4-2 up you want to wrap up the three points."
