Bayern midfielder Renato Sanches came on just before the hour mark and assisted Bruno Fernandes for the second of the night in the closing stages with an impressive pass. Striker Goncalo Guedes had earlier put A Selecção in front in the first before holding firm against strong pressure from the Serbs. “It was a hard-fought game. Serbia were strong opponents, but we did well because we kept our concentration and thought about our play,” Sanches summarised. The U21s of the European champions face Spain in their next group game on Tuesday (20:45 CEST).
Confed Cup starts in Russia
Hosts Russia opened the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup with a 2-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday. On Sunday, Arturo Vidal’s Chile take on Cameroon at 20:00 CEST. Joshua Kimmich and new FCB signings Sebastian Rudy and Niklas Süle all begin their Confed Cup adventure with World Champions Germany on Monday against Australia (17:00 CEST).
