Werder Bremen scrambled the ball away, but Xabi Alonso was on hand, crashing the ball into the top corner of the net from 25 yards, opening the scoring in the 2016/17 season with a belter. Eight minutes had been played when the midfielder drew first blood in the opening fixture between FC Bayern and Bremen. At the end of the day the German record champions won 6-0, getting off to a rousing start to the season.
On Friday FC Bayern contest the official opening fixture of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season. Alonso has hung up his boots, but Carlo Ancelotti has a number of players at his disposal who are capable of laying down a similar marker to start off the season in style.
