FC Bayern levelled the scores twice in the Supercup against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night before prevailing on penalties to seal the title. "The team showed character and fought brilliantly," sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic commented after the final whistle. It was no surprise to Robert Lewandowski that the Bavarians struggled: "It's the first match this season," declared the Poland captain, who levelled the scores in the first half. "We'll definitely be as strong as we were in the last and second-to-last seasons," he promised.
Reaction to Dortmund v Bayern:
Hasan Salihamidzic: "The team showed character and fought brilliantly. They bounced back again and again, and I'm really happy we've won the title. It was important to put into practice what we've discussed, that we were focused and played like Bayern Munich today. The lads who made their maiden appearances for Bayern today did a great job. I'm proud of the team."
Sven Ulreich: "Today we've seen some of the FC Bayern we want to see. In the first half we had countless chances that we should have exploited. Unfortunately we conceded two goals, we weren't attentive then. We've still won, it's fantastic, and we have to keep it up. We showed the right attitude today. Of course I'm glad I could help the team in the shootout and win the title."
Robert Lewandowski: "I'm very glad about the victory, it's the first title. We turned in a very good display. We made a few mistakes but it's the first match of the season. We have to step it up even more now. I'm sure everything will be going perfectly in a few months. We'll definitely be as strong as we were in the last and second-to-last seasons."
Peter Bosz (Dortmund coach): "You can't be satisfied if you're 2-1 in the lead with two minutes to go. We got off to a good start but too often lost possession after 15 or 20 minutes. We were lucky Bayern didn't score then. We were better in the second half."
Nuri Sahin (Dortmund): "We made a very good start but then lost control, Bayern put us under a lot of pressure. But we were in control throughout the second half, so it's bitter we've lost the match."
