A very young Bayern XI boasting an average age of just 21 years lost 2-0 to an experienced Napoli team on Wednesday, but the Bavarians refused to overestimate the defeat. "We didn't play so badly in the first half," said Joshua Kimmich, who wore the armband. Wednesday's captain was not the only one to see positive aspects, but the men from Munich also issued a warning prior to Saturday's Supercup final against Dortmund.
Reaction to Bayern v Napoli
Carlo Ancelotti (FC Bayern coach): "We've lost too many matches during pre-season but we'll work hard for the next few matches. The youngsters did a very good job today, it was a good test for them even though the level was very high. Niklas Süle and Sebastian Rudy turned in good displays. We'll now prepare for the match away to Dortmund on Saturday, and we'll try to win it."
Hasan Salihamidzic (FC Bayern sporting director): "We turned in a very good display today, especially in the first half. We weren't so clever in front of goal but we had good moves and set up good passing combinations. Napoli have clever and internationally experienced players, they made ruthless use of their chances. We won't overestimate the match. We know what we have to do now. We'll hit the gas and prepare well for the next few matches."
Joshua Kimmich: "We didn't play so badly in the first half. We conceded a stupid goal following a set-piece, but we had a number of chances. Our opponents controlled the match in the second half, we struggled to match their pace. You arguably learn more from a defeat during pre-season but we've conceded too many goals. We have to remedy it as soon as possible."
Niklas Süle: "We started quite well but were caught napping when they crossed, setting up the opener. Our rearguard was too high up the field before the second goal, you could tell we were a bit tired. But there are a few positive aspects too. We shouldn't overestimate the result even if it's always about winning at Bayern. We have an important match on Saturday, we have to turn in a different display then."
Sebastian Rudy: "We had one or two good chances in the first 20 minutes. It would have been different if we had scored then. At times it was a decent performance but we have to make sure we win our matches."
