FC Bayern got their 2017/18 Champions League campaign off to a successful start with three points against Anderlecht thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski, Thiago and Joshua Kimmich. "It was important to me that we win my Champions League debut. I'm very happy," a pleased Niklas Süle commented on the 3-0 victory over the Belgian champions. "It wasn't a top performance but a display that was sufficient at this stage," summarised Carlo Ancelotti.
Reaction to Bayern v Anderlecht
Carlo Ancelotti: "We expected to win the match, and we have. The match wasn't perfect but we controlled it and set up sustained passing combinations. We went one up very early, maybe that's why we didn't play at the highest intensity. We tried to find space. We surely could have played with more intensity but it wasn't necessary. It wasn't a top performance but a display that was sufficient at this stage. Anderlecht dropped very deep. Overall I'm pleased."
Joshua Kimmich: "It helped us that we took the lead early on and that Anderlecht were a man down. We should have extended our lead faster then. Anderlecht had one or two good chances to level, we mustn't allow that. We ultimately scored two more goals but we should have closed it out earlier. We know we have to improve. We didn't have so many chances today. We took many shots from distance, creating only a few gilt-edged chances. We always have to watch out in defence."
Niklas Süle: "It was important to me to win my Champions League debut, so I'm very happy. But it wasn't easy, we should have scored more goals in the first half and extended our lead. Our ideas and build-up play were very good. Unfortunately I failed to score."
