"The match lived up to its billing," Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented after FC Bayern's hard-fought victory over RB Leipzig. The Bavarians progressed to the second round of the DFB Cup as Sven Ulreich saved a penalty in a shootout following a 1-1 draw after 90 and 120 minutes. "I'm glad I could help the team advance," said the netminder.
Reaction to Leipzig v Bayern
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: "The match lived up to its billing. It was a great match. At the end of the day we were the luckier of the teams, our keeper saved the penalty. We had a lot more chances in the first half of extra-time, we could have closed it out then. It was a great fight by both teams."
Sven Ulreich: "It's always interesting when it comes down to penalties. Unfortunately we failed to wrap it up in 120 minutes. I'm glad I helped the team advance. A huge compliment to our goalkeeping coach, who always analyses the penalties thoroughly. Unfortunately I only saved one, but it was decisive as our lads converted well."
Arjen Robben: "The match was very hard on the nerves. It was football at a very high level, two top teams facing off. It was a hotly-contested, intense match. We conceded a goal despite an extra man, fortunately we levelled the scores, then we had lots of chances and were a bit unlucky. Heynckes prepared us well, we knew what to expect. Our display was okay in the first half, at least when we didn't have the ball. Our positional play was okay but we made too many mistakes in our build-up play. They're highly dangerous then, if you lose possession they're just gone."
Ralph Hasenhüttl (RB Leipzig coach): "I think we can leave with our heads held high. What a heroic fight we turned in today. It was just incredible in the light of what happened to us in the 120 minutes. It was a superb match that was fun for everyone involved. It was a true top clash. It's very hard against Bayern if you're a man down."
Emil Forsberg (RB Leipzig midfielder): "Of course it hurts, we turned in a good display. We were a man down for 60 minutes. It's hard against opponents like Bayern. We can still be proud, we gave it everything and fought. Life goes on. We'll meet them again on Saturday, and we want to beat them."
Peter Gulacsi (RB Leipzig keeper): "We fought superbly for 120 minutes. It's a pity we didn't reward ourselves. I think we showed character. It was an incredible team performance. We want to keep it up. It was our third match against Bayern, and this time we can say we managed a draw. The fourth match comes on Saturday, and if we play like we did in the first half we have a good chance of taking at least a point. It was evenly balanced in the first half."
