It was the crowning moment of a fantastic year. The dramatic title win at Hamburg and the emotional Champions League triumph against Valencia in Milan was followed a few months later, on 27 November 2001, by the drama of the Intercontinental Cup against Boca Juniors from Argentina. A match that is very special for Samuel Kuffour: the goal scored by the Ghanaian on 109 minutes paved the way for the second Intercontinental Cup victory after 1976.
Boca Juniors from Argentina (including Riquelme) prepared thoroughly for this match. The big club from Buenos Aires were excused from all national obligations by the Argentinian FA so they could spend six days preparing for the match in Tokyo. Bayern only arrived the day before the game – but nevertheless lifted the trophy.
Kuffour was named man of the match. His prize was a car. "I'll give that to my mother in Ghana," said the defender at the time.
