Happy birthday, Gerd Müller! 'Der Bomber' turned 72 on Friday. "He's the most important player in FC Bayern's history," said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, praising the achievements of the long-serving Bayern striker. Rummenigge added: "You can't praise Gerd highly enough. He scored over 1,000 goals for Bayern and Germany. FC Bayern hit the jackpot with him." Gerd Müller's 365 Bundesliga goals remain unsurpassed today, as do his 78 goals in the DFB Cup and his 40 in one season during the 1971/72 campaign. "Short, fat Müller", as he was affectionately christened by former FCB coach Tschik Cajkovski, was Bundesliga top scorer seven times in total. His goals not only helped to shape Bayern's 'golden 70s', but also, as Uli Hoeneß put it, "laid the foundation for everything the club has achieved." Best wishes, Gerd! And thank you!
Heynckes: Video assistant "needs time"
The video assistant referee is being trialled in the Bundesliga this season - and has been causing plenty of debate. Jupp Heynckes is an advocate of the technology but the Bayern coach is demanding more patience with the new assistance tool. "You have to take into account that everything needs time," he said. Heynckes stressed that the referee should not be diminished as the "supreme authority on the pitch." In his view, the video assist should only be consulted "on really serious decisions. The video assistant should interfere as little as possible."
