The Bavarians were in no mood to crow after the final whistle despite Wednesday night's 2-1 victory over RSC Anderlecht. "It was our worst display in a long time," commented Jérôme Boateng: "That isn't what we aim for." Coach Jupp Henckes said: "We won 2-1 but we didn't cover ourselves in glory."
Reaction to Anderlecht v Bayern
Jupp Heynckes: "The team were almost unrecognisable in the first half. The gaps we left were far too big, we lost the ball far too often, our passing was wayward, we allowed three or four presentable chances. We lacked so many things. Of course I complained bitterly at half-time. The good news was that it was 0-0 at the break. A compliment to our opponents. Anderlecht play differently under their new coach, they're much more hard-running and courageous. I warned my team before the match. We were still far too careless, you mustn't allow that nowadays, as we saw over 90 minutes. We won 2-1 but we didn't cover ourselves in glory."
Jérôme Boateng: "Nobody played well today. We weren't focused enough, we lost possession too often, we weren't aggressive enough, we were too far apart. We have to thank Sven Ulreich for keeping the scores level until half-time. We were better for a short spell in the second half before we faded again. We can't be satisfied with it, it's not what we aim for. It was our worst display in a long time."
Sven Ulreich: "We didn't find our way into the game, we lost the tackles, we left them too much space and gave the ball away too easily. We just didn't do a good job, especially in the first half. At the end of the day we're glad we've taken three points. We'll have to turn in a different display against PSG. We have to make amends for the first meeting."
Robert Lewandowski: "It wasn't a perfect match from our point of view but the main thing is we've taken three points. We were too passive up front in the first half. Anderlecht could have scored three goals in the first half, and even in the second half it was never a clear-cut victory for us. We had to fight until the end. It was way below par for Bayern."
