A late goal from Thomas Müller and Sven Ulreich's save from a penalty sealed a narrow 1-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart. FC Bayern extended their lead at the top of the standings, securing a comfortable cushion for the winter break. "The match had everything," said Jupp Heynckes.
Reaction to Stuttgart v Bayern
Jupp Heynckes: "The match had everything: it was highly interesting, intense and dramatic. It's unbelievable VfB don't have more points. Our players must recover and clear their heads, then I'm confident we can step up our game against Borussia Dortmund."
Thomas Müller: "Stuttgart were awkward, going for the one-on-ones almost everywhere. We put up a fight but didn't really play our game. We're glad we've won, that the penalty was saved in the last second, but we should have made it two of course. We've won 1-0 three times in a row, we don't exactly outplay our opponents. But perhaps we have the quality and the cleverness to get results even when things aren't going so well."
Sven Ulreich: "You couldn't have come up with a better movie script. I had a good feeling regarding the penalty. I'm glad I could help the team take three points."
Hannes Wolf (VfB Stuttgart coach): "The match reflected our last few weeks. We always come close but we haven't taken many points. I don't blame Chadrac Akolo. It just happens sometimes if you accept responsibility. We've had a fantastic year, now we're in a difficult situation before the second half of the season. But we'll accept the challenge from 13 January."
Ron-Robert Zieler (VfB Stuttgart keeper): "The team had a superb grip just as we did in the last few weeks, not much was missing. It reflects our current situation. We have enough quality, and if we live up to our potential we'll avoid relegation."
Holger Badstuber (VfB Stuttgart): "You don't have many chances against Bayern, only a few, and we just failed to take them. It's a pity if you're awarded a penalty in the last minute and you don't convert it."
