The Bundesliga restart fixture away to Leverkusen was as tough as expected, but at the end of the day Bayern's 3-1 victory was deserved. "My team did a good job in terms of tactics for the most part today," a satisfied Jupp Heynckes commented, but he also praised Bayern's opponents: "They were incredibly attack-minded, but I think we did a good job in defence."
Reaction to Leverkusen v Bayern
Jupp Heynckes: "My team did a good job in terms of tactics for the most part today, especially in defence. Leverkusen were very attack-minded so all our forwards had to work defensively. It's hard to win in Leverkusen. They're a young, hungry and talented team, and today they were incredibly attack-minded, but I think we did a very good job in defence."
Sandro Wagner: "Our goals are ambitious, we've worked well from the first day of mid-season training, and you could tell that today. We played as a team and created lots of chances. Leverkusen turned in a strong display too, but I think the victory was deserved, and it's nice to start off this way."
Franck Ribéry: "It's always tough in Leverkusen. We played well today, but we were in a difficult situation because Leverkusen put us under lots of pressure. We should have played much better when we had the ball, but we won 3-1 and that was important."
Heiko Herrlich (Bayer Leverkusen coach): "We don't need to be ashamed of our display, we went all out for victory and put our opponents under pressure. Bayern were more clinical in the decisive situations. We had our chances but the victory was deserved."
Sven Bender (Bayer Leverkusen): "We weren't courageous enough in the first half. We did better in the second half but were two down. Bayern were once again clinical, scored the goals and won deservedly."
