German teams have yet to win a European match at Liverpool's Anfield. FC Bayern's three attempts were unsuccessful, but on 20 October 1971 Sepp Maier played a key role in the goalless draw in Liverpool.

The picture is misleading. The evening in the north-west of England was anything but calm for the Cat from Anzing. Bayern encountered Liverpool in the second round of the European Cup Winners' Cup, and the 42,949 crowd at Anfield saw Bayern struggle in defence. After the final whistle Udo Lattek's troops celebrated the draw like a victory, and they had to thank Sepp Maier for keeping the scores level. Two weeks later the Bavarians won the second leg 3-1 in Munich.
