German teams have yet to win a European match at Liverpool's Anfield. FC Bayern's three attempts were unsuccessful, but on 20 October 1971 Sepp Maier played a key role in the goalless draw in Liverpool.

Bayern encountered Liverpool in the second round of the European Cup Winners' Cup, and the 42,949 crowd at Anfield saw Bayern struggle in defence.
