FC Bayern crowned 2018 social media champions

The Bundesliga Meisterschale, the DFB Cup, the Champions League and the Supercup. FC Bayern’s trophy cabinet is already rather full, but it now has a new, smaller addition as the German record champions are also now the leaders in social media! In May the club was named social media champions for 2018 by the Ismaninger Institut für Fußballmanagement (Ismaninger Institute for Football Management), and now the trophy has been handed over at Säbener Straße.

The title was based on the independent assessment of the official Facebook accounts of the 18 Bundesliga clubs throughout the season using the scientific method of the Social Media Index (SMI).

Professor Tobias Haupt, head of “digitalisation in sport” at the institute, said, “Key to Bayern’s triumph was the way they got fans involved through innovative ideas and crossmediality. Posts concerning both sporting and more general issues, quiz questions or competitions, all invite fans to interact.”

The people in charge of social media at Säbener Straße definitely gave their first title a like. “It’s a great accolade. It’s a sign of the high quality of our social media team and the involvement of Bayern fans online,” said Stefan Mennerich, FC Bayern’s head of media, digital and communication. “And that doesn’t just go for Facebook, which is what’s been rated here, but for all social media platforms, from Instagram to Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube,” Mennerich added.

Felix Loesner, head of social media, said, “We’re thrilled with this title. Our motto for all content is always: Fans first! With storytelling and communication in real time we want to guarantee that our fans throughout the world feel emotionally involved. It seems like we did that really well last season, and now I’m looking forward to the new season with my team and exciting our fans once again with up-to-date content and exciting projects.”
