Here we go again! FC Bayern kick off the new Champions League campaign away to Portuguese league runners-up Benfica on Wednesday. As usual, the record champions have headed off to Portugal the day before the game.
Ahead of the flight to the Iberian peninsular, FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge gave his assessment of the task: “We drew 2-2 in Lisbon two years ago and it wasn’t an easy game. And we only won 1-0 in Munich. It’s not a forgone conclusion. We are the favourites but we have to make sure we don’t underestimate this group.” He set out the target for FCB in tomorrow ’s game. “It’s important we start well. It will do us good to be motivated and focused for the first group game.”
Bayern will land in Lisbon at midday (local time, CEST -1 hour) and then travel to the team hotel for lunch. Niko Kovac and Manuel Neuer will be at the pre-match press conference at 17.15 and the final training session at the Estádio da Luz starts at 18.00.
FC Bayern II players Paul Will (central midfield) and Wooyeong Jeong (winger) travel to Portugal with 19 members of the first team squad. Bayern set off for Munich Airport on the team bus at 08.00 CEST with departure scheduled for just before ten o’clock.
