AEK Athens secured a victory on Saturday night three days before FC Bayern visit Greece on Champions League matchday three. In the local derby against pointless, bottom-of-the-table Apollon Smyrnis, the reigning champions of Greece won 2-0. The AEK goals were scored by Petros Mantalos (37') and Marko Livaja (85').

A fifth win in the seventh game of the season keeps AEK in touch with the leading group in the Greek Super League. However, the champions only have 13 points in the league as the club from the capital were deducted three points in the middle of October following a Greek FA disciplinary commission. The points were deducted for crowd trouble caused by the AEK supporters at the derby against Olympiakos on 7 October (1-1): During half-time there was a violent confrontation involving AEK fans and the police who responded with tear gas.
