Bayern fans collectively gasped on Sunday when Manuel Neuer had to be substituted against Fortuna Düsseldorf. However, the FCB captain remained calm because he knew immediately what had happened. “I’ve got quite a good feeling for my body and knew it was a tear,” the 33-year-old explained at a press conference on Wednesday.
“Luckily it wasn’t my foot but the calf,” he continued. “I was out for over a year because of my metatarsal and I’d actually expected a muscle injury much earlier.” Neuer’s muscles have long stood the test of time, but unfortunately the moment has come. However, the goalkeeper does not wish to waste his efforts getting exasperated with the injury, instead he would much prefer to give everything to get back into action as quickly as possible.
Support for the team
“It’s tough to say when I’ll be back in net. I think Leipzig is a realistic goal,” the 2014 World Cup winner suggested of his comeback. On 11 May, Bayern take on third-placed RB Leipzig on the penultimate matchday of the Bundesliga season. Until then, Sven Ulreich will deputise, which Neuer does not see as an issue.
“He’s had great games and shown good performances. I think he’s ready, so I’m not at all worried,” said the 2013 treble-winner of his replacement. Neuer will also continue to support his teammates despite the injury. “It’s important for me to stay with the team,” the Germany international declared. “We’ve got two finals coming up against Bremen and we want to win them both so we can finish ahead of Dortmund and be in the DFB Cup final.”
Bayern kick off the final five weeks of the 2018/19 campaign with that league and cup doubleheader against Werder. Neuer & Co. still have a one-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. “It’s a strange season and a lot has already happened. We need to remain fully focussed,” the goalkeeper warned.
This Bundesliga title race is the most exciting in years. However, the shot-stopper believes the record champions still hold the advantage. “We have to take the results from recent games with us. Such comprehensive and decisive wins are important.” The shock of his injury from the Düsseldorf game should remain a mere side note.
