Bayern pro Alphonso Davies was in the starting eleven as Canada kicked-off their CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with a convincing win. In their opening match, Canada beat Martinique 4-0 (HT:1-0) on Saturday evening (local time), joining Mexico (who trounced Cuba 7-0) on equal points at the top of Group A. The two leading teams will face each other in the second group match next Wednesday in Denver.
A brace from 19-year-old striker Jonathan David in the 33rd and 53rd minutes paved the way for the Canadians' win at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Following an assist from Davies in the 63rd minute, Junior Hoilett made sure of victory before Scott Arfied topped-off a great team performance with a goal just four minutes later. Davies was substituted after 70 minutes.
