Quarter-finals in sight for Davies despite defeat
Canada and Alphonso Davies had to accept defeat in the top match in Group A at the CONCACAF Gold Cup but they are still in with a very good chance of making the quarter-finals. The FC Bayern striker, who played the full 90 minutes, was on the losing side in a 3-1 defeat against top favourites Mexico. Canada are now in second place on three points – behind the already qualified Mexicans – and in the last game against Cuba (overnight from Sunday to Monday) they have the chance to go through to the next round with a win.
In spite of solid defensive work by the Canadians, Roberto Alvarado opened the scoring before the break on 40 minutes. Davies had a great chance to level after the restart but his effort was saved by the keeper. Andrés Guardado then doubled the lead almost straightaway (54'). The North Americans upped their game and created several chances with Lucas Cavallini pulling a goal back on 75 minutes. But Guardado restored the two-goal lead just two minutes later.
