Successful debut for world champion Hernández

New signing Lucas Hernández enjoyed a successful debut for FC Bayern. The French world champion made his first appearance for the German record champions in Thursday's friendly against Rottach-Egern. Hernández came on at half-time in the 23-0 victory over the minnows, playing 45 minutes alongside his compatriot Benjamin Pavard in central defence.

He feels "very good," a visibly relieved Hernández said after his maiden appearance. He gains momentum "step by step," added the 23-year-old: "I'm working hard to make my first competitive appearance soon. Maybe it'll be enough for Monday's match." Bayern take on fourth-division Energie Cottbus in the first DFB Cup round.

"Lucas is a top player, and not only in terms of mentality and attitude," sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said in praise of the France international. "He's a player who can lead from the front. I'm very happy he's joined the team."

The new signing, who joined from Atlético this summer, underwent surgery on his right knee at the end of March. He took up the squad programme at the Tegernsee training camp after intense rehab. He completed every session since then. "I'm feeling very well, I have no pain, I'm in good shape," reported Hernández. He is "close to 100 percent."

Hernández did not have much to prevent against Rottach-Egern, so his first appearance was not a true yardstick. The defender will now manage his workload until coach Niko Kovac and the medical unit give the green light for his first competitive fixture for the German record champions.
