The FC Bayern players display finest technique on the ball out on the Allianz Arena pitch, and the German record champions' home thrills the fans with the highest technological standards off the pitch too. The latter will be expanded next year as FC Bayern and partners Deutsche Telekom have entered a special cooperation: the new mobile communication standard 5G will be available in and around the Allianz Arena from spring 2020.
"Together with FC Bayern, we'll enable our fans to experience the 5G technology. It can offer visitors to the Allianz Arena a new dimension of spectator experience via VR or AR," commented Michael Hagspihl, Deutsche Telekom director in charge of private client relations.
"The Allianz Arena stands for quality, progress and innovation, so we're very glad we can offer our fans this special technology so early with the help of our longstanding partners Deutsche Telekom," said FC Bayern München AG CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "After the comprehensive W-LAN extension in 2015, the 5G technology is the next logical step to make the experience at the stadium even more attractive around the game."
The 5G technology can process large amounts of data significantly quicker, so video streams can be watched faster and in higher resolutions. In addition, the technology makes it possible for the visitors to experience augmented or virtual reality with 5G-capable devices via apps. Among other things, fans might walk in as the 12th man of the team or participate in goal celebrations. Virtual competitions between visitors are conceivable too. The sport experience and visits to the Allianz Arena will be even more intense thanks to 5G. Development of the apps is set to begin in 2019.
