The new Champions League season has started perfectly for Niko Kovač and FC Bayern with a commanding 3-0 home victory over Red Star Belgrade at the Allianz Arena. "We can be very satisfied,” the coach enthused afterwards. "We always had the game under control," added Robert Lewandowski, scorer of the Reds’ second goal on the night.
Reaction to Bayern vs. Red Star Belgrade
Niko Kovač: "Congratulations to the team for a good start to the new Champions League season! We can be very satisfied. It's good that we created so many chances - we could have scored more goals of course. But Red Star defended with everything they had and always pulled everyone back. Now it's time to regroup and turn in another good performance against Köln in 72 hours."
Robert Lewandowski: "We always had the game under control and played well, we upped the pace and created a lot of chances. But we didn’t score enough goals. We always tried to get forward. Sometimes we might have made wrong decisions, but these are little things. In the end it was only three goals, but it could have been five or six. You need games like today to help with a good analysis, to see what you can do better. After the second goal, it got easier. I'm glad I scored again."
Thomas Müller: "When I come on [as a sub], it's all about pushing things on. Regardless of how long I’m on for, I've set myself the goal that I want to mix things up in attack. The other players are grateful for that. You can see that everyone puts their shoulders to the wheel again and if it leads to a goal, it's even better."
Vladan Milojević, Red Star Belgrade coach: "We knew what to expect, we played the powerful FC Bayern, who are among the favourites for the title. It was a great experience for us to play in the Allianz Arena. We weren't afraid and tried to keep it tight to withstand the attacks and provide a platform for counter-attacks. But we lost possession in midfield too fast. All in all, I'd like to congratulate Bayern on their well-deserved victory."
