The Säbener Strasse has been relatively quiet over the last few days as many FC Bayern pros are on national team duty while coach Niko Kovač has awarded the remaining players some days free of training. The FC Bayern training ground was almost vacant, but one player did not take a breather, working towards his comeback.
"I'm on a good path, everything's going according to plan, even a bit faster than expected. I'm feeling good," a satisfied Leon Goretzka said. The extra shifts during the international break have paid off. The 24-year-old underwent an operation on his left thigh around a month ago. After taking up running last week, he was back on the ball one day later and gradually upped his workload in individual sessions with the fitness coaches.
Martínez joins Goretzka
"The good thing about my rehab is that I only had to run without a ball once. But then I got the ball immediately, and that's obviously at the centre of our sport and most fun," Bayern's number 18 revealed. Javi Martínez joined Goretzka on Monday, using the day to take up preparations for the Bundesliga match away to FC Augsburg on Saturday.
The first internationals will return to Munich and resume team training under Kovač on Tuesday. Goretzka will probably be able to complete the full squad programme soon. "I think I can train with the team this week," said the midfielder, hoping he can quickly return to the pitch. "At the end of the day the coach has to decide, and the question is how I feel. I'm confident I'll soon be ready."
