Home strength and long winning streak
Bayern Munich against Bayer 04 Leverkusen -- a match-up that has delivered some fiery battles in Bundesliga history. Bayern head coach Hansi Flick will undoubtedly have fond memories of one of these encounters in particular, when the then 20-year-old made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern in a 2-1 victory away to Leverkusen on 20 November 1985. He played 11 times against Bayer 04 during his professional career, the team he faced most in Germany's top division. On Saturday, Flick will once again pit himself against the Werkself, only this time as a Bundesliga coach. fcbayern.com take a look at the facts and figures surrounding the game.
Last Time Out
At the beginning of February this year, Bayern lost 3-1 away to the Werkself, despite being one goal to the good at halftime. The defeat on Matchday 20 was to be the only loss the record champions suffered in the second half of last year's campaign, a run of form that enabled the men from Munich to secure their 29th German championship title at the end of the season. Leon Goretzka had put FCB into the lead before the break, before Leon Bailey, Kevin Volland and Lucas Alario turned the game around in favour of the Rhineland side.
Largest Victory | Heaviest Defeat
Bayern's largest margin of victory in this match was some years ago: Bayern won 5-0 against Leverkusen in the Olympiastadion on 4 September 1982. Bayern's current CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge opened the scoring, before Dieter Hoeneß bagged a brace, with Udo Horsmann's finish and an own goal from Jürgen Gelsdorf shortly before fulltime rounded off a comprehensive victory. Bayer 04 have never managed to beat Bayern by more than three goals, although Leverkusen have done so on five occasions, most recently in a 4-1 home win on 28 August 2004.
Bayern clearly leading the way
The overall head-to-head record between the two opponents speaks for itself: the men from Bavaria have won 47 times, well over half of the 80 Bundesliga matches played to date. No other team has beaten Leverkusen as many times and scored as many goals (151) in Bundesliga history as Bayern. The Werkself have triumphed in this fixture 17 times, with 16 draws.
Bayern goals at home guaranteed
FC Bayern have scored in every one of their last 29 home games against Leverkusen in the Bundesliga - the last time the team from Munich ended the game without a goal to their name was in a 1-0 loss against Bayer in October 1989. The record champions have scored a total of 93 goals in 40 home games against Leverkusen.
Lewandowski with ground to make up
With Robert Lewandowski's current form in front of goal, it's hard to imagine that the Pole has 'only' scored three goals in 15 matches against Leverkusen; the fewest he has scored against any team in the Bundesliga that he's faced over ten times.
