Flick: I'm proud of the team

Bayern showed their character as they ground out a 2-0 win at home to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday in their final match of 2019. Two goals in the closing stages from Joshua Zirkzee and Serge Gnabry made it a successful end to the year, and coach Hansi Flick praised his side’s will to win afterwards: “The lads believed they could win until the end, which pleased me a lot.”

Post-match reaction

Hansi Flick: “Wolfsburg acquitted themselves very well. It certainly wasn’t our best performance, which was also to do with how well Wolfsburg defended and how cleverly they closed the space. I’m just proud of the team today – they deserved the win, as they have done in previous games. The lads believed they could win until the end, which pleased me a lot. They’re growing as a team and were rewarded with three points today.”

Manuel Neuer: “It was another triumph of will. We did everything to win and gave ourselves a nice Christmas present. Obviously it’s fantastic that we got the goals in the end – it’s crazy that Joshua, like he did at Freiburg, scored with virtually his first touch of the ball. We’ve all done ourselves proud in recent games and are looking forward to the second half of the season.”

Bayern’s last-gasp duo, Joshua Zirkzee and Serge Gnabry, ensured another late win 👇

Serge Gnabry: “We want to win every game. I think we neednessly dropped points against Leverkusen and Gladbach. We’ve made amends for that a bit with the late wins against Freiburg and again today. We’re back on it now.”

The match report from an important home win over Wolfsburg👇

Oliver Glasner, VfL Wolfsburg coach: “Congratulations to Hansi Flick and FC Bayern on the win. Obviously it’s bitter for us because the winning goal came so late. I think we made it very, very difficult for Bayern. We defended well for large parts of the game and were also a constant threat going forward. We had three or four chances to score, which unfortunately we didn’t take. Towards the end we were getting more and more tired and the pressure from the opposition was getting bigger. Bayern took advantage of one lapse of concentration and then won. It’s a shame for us as I was actually very pleased with the performances. We take a lot of positives.”
