With seven intense sessions under their belts, Bayern have reached the halfway stage of their winter training camp in Doha. The players’ legs are heavy, which is why coach Hansi Flick scheduled just a 60-minute session on the morning of day four on Tuesday.
Fit for the chase
“We reduced things a little today,” said Leon Goretzka in summary of the session where the record champions’ players had time catch their breath during some gymnastic exercises after beginning with a rondo. “I think it was the right time,” the 24-year-old continued. “We’ve worked really hard over the last few days and got our fitness levels up to scratch.”
Nevertheless, Goretzka & Co. accept the need for exertion. “Training camps are about laying the foundations for the second half of the season,” said the Germany international as the champions look to turn around the four-point deficit to Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig. “We still have to play every team ahead of us, so it’s completely realistic and is our clear aim.”
Half-time for Bayern
The remainder of the training camp will now be about “tactical details” to ensure the team begin the new year as best as possible. Nevertheless, coach Flick has granted his players an afternoon off, and Goretzka has already made plans. “I’m going to relax by the pool and read a book,” the midfielder revealed. He admits that the past few days were simply too strenuous for big activities.
