FC Bayern got off to a perfect start to 2020. The Bavarians had to be patient in the 4-0 victory away to Hertha Berlin but ultimately sealed an utterly deserved win. "We wore them down," commented Thomas Müller, who put his side ahead on the hour mark. Hansi Flick was "satisfied" after the first competitive match of the year: "It's not so easy to assess where you are in the first match, after such a short preparation. So it was fantastic to start off the second half of the season with such a result," explained the Bayern coach.
Reaction to Hertha v Bayern
Hansi Flick: "I'm satisfied we started off the second half this way. A 4-0 victory: not everyone achieves this in Berlin. I think it was the right result. It's not so easy to assess where you are in the first match, after such a short preparation. So it was fantastic to start off the second half of the season with such a result."
Thomas Müller: "We wore them down. The gaps grew a bit in the second half. I think we were too patient in the first half. It didn't feel wrong but we weren't really dangerous. We let Hertha play but closed down the space where it mattered. We set out to up the tempo in the second half."
Jürgen Klinsmann (Hertha Berlin coach): "Four goals are quite a lot. We did well for 60 minutes, we had two or three chances in the first half. Bayern were dominant. Then we conceded the first one, but the penalty was the crux, it was our downfall. But we must collect points against our rivals in the bottom half of the table."
Davie Selke (Hertha Berlin): "Bayern's individual quality made the difference in the end. The way they finished their moves was very strong. You just can't dominate against Bayern. We wanted to annoy them and did well in the first half. It was clear that Bayern would have more possession. Thiago's passes are world-class."
