Bayern vs Schalke: The mother of all DFB Cup ties

An absolute cup classic! Bayern are to meet Schalke 04 in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. The two sides have already faced each other 11 times in the cup: no side has faced FCB more often in the competition (Dortmund and Hamburg SV have also played Bayern 11 times each in the DFB Pokal). In the history of the competition, only Kaiserlautern vs. Werder Bremen and Schalke vs. Mönchengladbach have been played more often (twelve times each).

1984: The mother of all cup matches

A legendary encounter: Dieter Hoeneß and Bayern had a real fight in the 1984 semi-final in Schalke. After Bayern led twice in extra time, Olaf Thon scored for the hosts in the 120th minute to make it 6-6.

In this long history, there've been of course one or two memorable matches - most notably the semi-final in 1984, when Schalke 04, then in the second division, fought Bayern tooth and nail, with Olaf Thon scoring in the 120th minute for the Royal Blues to make it 6-6 at full time. It was his third goal in the game, and the game went down in the annals of history as "mother of all cup ties". The side from Munich won the subsequent replay - there were no penalty shoot-outs at the time - and went on to advance to the final where they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach to lift the trophy.

2010: Robben's extra burst to fire Bayern to the final

Arjen Robben scored in the 2010 semi final against Schalke 04 after an outstanding solo run to put Bayern 1-0 up. The scoreline remained that way all the way until full time.

Bayern also fondly remember the semi-final clash in the 2009/10 season: everyone thought a penalty shoot-out was a foregone conclusion, but Arjen Robben had other ideas, slaloming his way through Schalke's team with a 65 yard solo run in the 112th minute, before finishing well to fire the record champions into the final.

Title winners

2005: Michael Ballack celebrates winning the 2004/05 DFB Cup, after Bayern beat Schalke 2-1 in the final.

Apart from direct clashes, both sides also have enormously impressive trophy winning pedigree. FCB are the record champions with 19 titles, with Schalke third in the all-time standings with five title wins. The last time these two teams met in the cup was in the 2016/17 season, when Bayern beat the men from the Ruhrgebiet 3-0 in the quarter-finals at the Allianz Arena. With the twelfth cup tie between these two sides imminent, fans are looking forward to another spectacular chapter writing itself into the history books - with Bayern hopefully ending up as winners.
