Bayern fought hard for their fourth Bundesliga victory in a row. Leon Goretzka rounded off the 2-0 scoreline in injury time. "We scored the opener but failed to double the lead and close it out," Hansi Flick commented after the all-Bavaria derby. Thomas Müller added: "We lacked the ruthlessness we displayed in the last few weeks."
Reaction to Bayern v Augsburg
Hansi Flick: "We knew it would be a tough match. The first half in particular proved us right. Augsburg did a very good job. As expected they dropped deep, tried to put us under pressure and closed down the space. We lacked pace and fluidity, that's not what I'm used to. We scored the opener but failed to double the lead and close it out. The second goal towards the end was a certain relief. At the end of the day we have three more points, which is what we wanted."
Thomas Müller: "I had a chance shortly before the break, I should have scored then. We were better after half-time, we were more forceful and created more chances. But even then we lacked this absolute killer mentality, this ruthlessness we displayed in the last few weeks. Despite our clear dominance, we had to thank Manuel Neuer for preserving the lead in the 85th minute. That's not the level at which we want to perform, not the level we displayed in the last few weeks."
David Alaba: "We achieved our goal, it was a deserved victory. We should have made it two earlier, we had clear-cut chances in the second half. We should have taken them to close it out earlier. We didn't achieve that, but it was crucial to take the three points and extend our lead."
Martin Schmidt (FC Augsburg coach): "Congratulations to FC Bayern, it's all up to you, a lot is still possible. We deserve some praise for our performance. We played well for large spells, we could have taken something away. Unfortunately it wasn't enough. We knew it would be very difficult, we set ourselves intermediate goals. We conceded the goal right after the break. We had to take more risks then so Bayern had some chances. We were a bit lucky and kept it open, and then we had a big chance. If we want to take something away we must take chances such as Florian Niederlechner's one. At the end of they day it was down to quality, and clearly the quality is very big here."
Resolute Reds overcome stubborn Augsburg: the match report
Florian Niederlechner (FC Augsburg): "We turned in a superb display. You can't always spoil everything for Bayern. We wanted to keep it open for a long time. We could have levelled the scored towards the end, I should have taken the chance. I'm sorry for the team."
Andreas Luthe (FC Augsburg): "At the end of the day it was down to Bayern's quality. Thomas Müller is known for these runs. They just did it very, very well. But more would have been possible. We could have equalised and maybe salvaged a draw. This way they had more space and we conceded the second goal."
